Welcome to On My Way To China

Planning a trip to China?  Do you need information on booking hotels, how to use your phone with an e-sim, sim or vpn? Do you need to know if you need a visa and how to get one?  All of these questions are answered on this site!

Drawing on my experience of over 20 years of traveling to China, I decided to build this website to make your journey to China easier.  It is chock full of the information that you need to book trains, hotels, use your phone etc.

The information is current! –  based on my recent trips in 2024 and updates since then.

The most common comment I hear from people who travel to China for the first time is “Wow! What an amazing place!  I had no idea it was like this! It’s so different from what I thought!… and it’s so safe!”

What you have seen in the media about China and the real China are two different things. I can attest to that. When ever someone talks about China, I show them these two pictures!  First is the Beijing Subway map from 2007. The second is the present map!

Amazing isn’t it?  This growth has occurred in every city in China!  In addition, there are

  • all new electric buses and taxis (some are driverless),
  • a futuristic cashless and high technology society,
  • high quality goods,
  • new, new airports (New Beijing Airport was opened in 2008 then the new, new airport in 2019
  • brand new hospitals and schools with the most advanced scanning technology in the world,
  • high quality food supply network,  etc… the list goes on and on….
  • tens of thousands of kilometers of new roads, bridges and tunnels
  • beautiful scenery such as Zhangjiajie made accessible through amazing feats of engineering
  • beautiful preservation of historical buildings and artifacts.

People in China are very friendly towards foreigners.  Go to China and see for yourself!

Travel Tip:  It is best to avoid travel to China during the first week of October and the first week of May.  These are national holidays and hundreds of millions of Chinese travel during these times. This makes  tourist attractions very crowded and makes it difficult to book hotels or trains during this time.  Otherwise, enjoy your travel!
